Location: Ottobrunn

Start: 01.05.2017

Duration: 6 months

The department Future System Studies is actively involved in the validation of the European satellite navigation system Galileo, a process that requires the processing of a vast amount of data.

In order to achieve their goals in Galileo, they are already counting with a software facility capable of automatically storing and pre-processing satellite data acquired through multiple local receivers installed in their premises in Ottobrunn. This facility currently implements a historical database (running on MongoDB) automatically replenished from a number of sources and is capable of responding to data queries from a number of client types. The duties of the server backend (programmed in java/javascript running on an Apache Tomcat server) are two-fold:
1) pre-processes the incoming data and detects events to trigger the data recording and the notifications to registered users, and 2) makes the recorded data available to our engineers and customers through a restricted access scheme.

Tasks & accountabilities

  • Optimizing the performance of the already existing Mongo DB server in terms of reading time
  • Enhance the backend data pre-processor with additional event detection policies
  • Enhance the support to remote radio navigation receiver protocols for data streaming
  • Exhaustive test of the aforementioned enhancements
  • Giving recommendations to the engineering team on further enhancements/modifications
  • These activities can be used in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the relevant university degree.

Required skills

  • Enrolled student (m/f) within Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering / Telecom, Networks or similar field of study
  • Good MS-Office skills are required
  • English: advanced
  • German: at least basic skills
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.
