Airbus Group - Airbus Defence & Space

Airbus is a leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. Airbus champions innovative technologies and offers some of the world’s most fuel efficient and quiet aircraft. Airbus has sold over 13.800 aircraft to more than 360 customers worldwide. Airbus has achieved more than 8,000 deliveries since the first Airbus aircraft entered into service. Headquartered in Toulouse, France.

Tasks & accountabilities

The scope of this master thesis is to:

  • Determine the appropriate maintenance concepts for the sub-units (preventive, corrective or combined)
  • Apply an adequate time-depended model (Monte Carlo, recursive etc.) and model the system considering the boundary conditions like high system complexity (up to 250 maintainable units, failure tolerances, etc.), hostile environment and complicated reachability (limited supply frequency and limited transport capability)
  • Analysis and calculation of various availability types (point availability, average availability and steady state availability) for each of the limited number of nominal maintenance intervals within the mission time
  • Identify the weak points within the system design, logistics and maintenance concept and propose relevant measures/actions
  • Determine the expected numbers of required spare units and maintenance rate
  • The outcome of the master thesis will highly influence trade-offs and decisions related to general cost reduction of the project with regard to the layout of the system (i.e. level of maintainability, maintenance effort) and the design of sub-units (i.e. parts quality, internal redundancies, mass, volume).
  • This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.

Required skills

  • Enrolled student (m/f) within Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Safety Engineering or similar field of study
  • Good knowledge of MatLab and the MatLab/Simulink environment
  • Any background in statistics would be beneficial
  • Being able to work in an international team
  • Language: fluent in English
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently
